Keep Calm with Layers of Green Lime

Keep calm, smile and create beautiful things... my favourite phrase stamp!

This is part of an art journal page created during an afternoon with friends. We had coffee, lunch and lots of laughs. A totally fabulous day!

Background was made using Tim Holtz Distress paints and inks with Darkroom Door and IndigoBlu stamps and Tim Holtz stencils.

The new Twisted Citron lime green Distress Paint is on the left hand edge, stamped with the borders stamp from IndigoBlu. The roses are made from th "Scribbles" Layering Stencil by Tim in the same paint but inked over with Weathered Wood Distress Stain, using a sponge. Sponges are great for layering as they are soft and ink soaks right in, giving you light feathery marks.

The final look was created on my phone using 'Studio' and a few of their groovy elements.

Love is in the Air

Happy New Year, Happy Australia Day, Happy Valentine's, Happy Pancake Day (and I still don't know what that one is for!) and Happy Every Other Day of the Year!

It's been so busy these past few months with Art by Jenny. While the graphic design side of my business was busy before Christmas, its slowed down, allowing me more time to dedicate to my wonderful shop of art and craft treasures. I've been keeping a blog on my shop's website if you want a look - www.shop.artbyjenny.com.au/blogs/art-and-craft-news.

I love having a shop!!! Absolutely LOVE it. Its mostly online, but its the next best thing to the bricks and mortar version... which I will have one day - a shop with a gallery and studio overlooking the ocean. One day :) In the meantime I have my awesome shop, my studio and my big beautiful verandah with the most awesome table my Dad made from my son's old bed.

I love my new table - are you seeing why I've called this post "Love is in the Air"? I just love everything today! Got to be a good thing hey? Well I think so :)

So now I have a space for workshops that doesn't make everyone feel so squished! My studio is only little but I'll never complain... its such a privilege to have one and I'm very grateful to have it too. I love being out there (both the verandah-studio and art studio) with the birds, sunshine, canvas, paper and paint.

I have many favourite things about owning a shop (no, bookwork is not one of them! lol, can't love everything). One is to look for items for my customers. I was searching for stamps to colour with the marvellous new Chameleon Pens when I came across this frog doing the ballet (or toad as they call it) by Stampendous.

Of course I bought it straight away and used him as part of an ATC swap the same day he arrived!

In the photo above, my frog has been inked with Distress Ink in Peeled Paint and Worn Lipstick. Then his crown was inked with Sakura's Gold Gelly Roll and the white was added using the Distress Ink Watercolour Marker in Picket Fence (white).

I love frogs and toads :) Frogs are adorable and such gentle creatures - made by Mother Nature in the most exquisite colours and so many sizes. They always look so happy and peaceful. Toads have got features only a mother could love, in other words, they have fabulous personalities!

A small collection of some fabulous stamps that came with my frog ballerina.

I always like them (being brought up with Wind in the Willows would have had something to do with that), and then I read a book by Morris Gleitzman called Toad Rage (about cane toads in far north Queensland) and now I think even cane toads are wonderful. So they're not the best animal for Australia, but its not their fault they're here... you can thank the humans for that one! They're just making the best of what they have, like we all do with life. Read the book, you'll find Limpy will steal your heart!

Another thing I've been doing more of lately is cardmaking. I love making cards for family and friends... I just seem to keep running out of time!

This card pictured below was alot of fun to create. I sponged (using the bottle's built in sponge) Distress Stains for the sky in two colours (Broken China and Stormy Sky) overlapping the green 'grass' - Peeled Paint Distress Stain. After adding the shadows with a marker (just rough scribbles), it was then heat dried and then splattered with water. After it was dried (air dried while I made the caravan) I then stamped gum trees in green and brown Distress Ink Pad using the stamps by Darkroom Door.

The finished caravan card, shown here in my studio with my cat kitchen paper holder in the background, another treasure made by my clever Dad (Woodn Marbles).

The caravan stamp, also by Darkroom Door, was inked with Distress Ink Pads in Dried Marigold and Spiced Marmalade. After cutting out, I inked with other colours and coloured the door with Ripe Persimmon, then added the white using a white Sharpie. The curtains are made of ribbons.

The barbecue and other elements were stamped with black StazOn, with the white table and chairs stamped in grey, inked over with a white Sharpie. Ranger now has a white inkpad that would be perfect for this card.

What's next...? The birds in the sky are hand drawn with a black pen as are the letters on the banner. The banner was cut out of pale yellow scraps of paper with the stitches "sewn" with black pen. Oh, and the umbrella is painted with Smooch :) mmmmm... Smooch! I love Smooch - such beautiful colours and so sparkly shiny!

Making Art a Priority... Every Day

I'm getting closer to creating some sort of art every single day! Its awesome :)

This week I finished off my little thank you cards that were created using Dylusions Ink Spray and Darkroom Door stamps. All the dragonflies are now attached to stop them flying away, and the insides use the "Stay calm, smile and create beautiful things" stamp that I chatted about here. On the back is my logo and contact details... giving them a professional finish.

Its always good to have a professional polish on things, even handcreated things :) Its like putting decorations on a cake... all cakes look fantastic with icing, but decorations (whether handmade icing roses or plastic 'happy birthday' signs) make them look amazing.

This week I joined in an art swap with a Facebook craft group. Its a great group - we all encourage each other to be crafty and creative - the amount of beautiful artwork and crafted items everybody makes every day is incredible. It inspires me to ignore dishes and housework and get into my much loved studio.

Of course, then I get stressed out that the house is a mess or we've run out of clean clothes, but I'm getting closer to finding some sort of balance... which is nice.

The swap I joined was to make 2 flat (like large bookmarks) handcrafted spools, or cotton reels. I started with a sheet of Tim Holtz's Grungeboard (which smells like leather, love it) and cut out 2 spool shapes (I like the old wooden spools, so used that shape). I then trimmed to size a sheet of orange, brown and gold printed paper that I had in my paper stash. I'd made it using my Gelli Arts Gelli printing plate, paints and stencils.

On the back I used a piece of what I call lace paper. Its a white, handmade looking paper with raised flowers trailing all over one side. I painted the lace paper with Liquitex paints in yellows and brown mixed with a matte medium (which can be used as a glue, sealer or varnish).

Once dry, I sanded the edges - it gives them a great smooth finish while a the same time, ensures the edges don't get tattered (unless you want them tattered, which I didn't). Then inked the edges using the beautiful brown walnut Distress ink with a blender tool (as you do!).

Next, I gathered hessian leftovers from the previous day's craft session and wrapped them around the spool, making it look like a spool of string. I realise the idea is to make the spools look like something else other than a spool, but the embroider in me just couldn't resist!!!

Of course they needed a needle as well - made from Grungeboard and silver Inca paste (for something different to paint). Usually Inca paste is polished to a high sheen once dry but the more I polished the more the paste came off... it didn't like adhering to the porous board much, so I've left it 'raw' Inca. They're not as shiny as they could be but they look ok, sort of like oversized, well used needles.

They were finished but missing something... so I played around with my border punches and added it to both sides of the spools. Then added a few of the scraps as well.

They fly out tonight on their way to Canada to be with their new owner. I love them and hopefully my swap partner will too!

I'm off to the studio now to take photos of the new wooden shapes the talented Ray of Wood'n Marbles has created - Halloween witches and cats! They're ATC sized and are totally gorgeous.

Proof of a Wonderful Day of Art

"Something on Saturday" was a fun and productive one. I had a brilliant time with Me, Myself and I - the three of us had a great day :) Its the middle of the SA school holidays so people are away camping and having a beautiful time with their friends and family.

I'm offering this background (and card) technique as a tutorial for a fabulous magazine, Heart Journal Magazine, so won't be posting it here until its published, but here is a sneak peak and links to buy the makings if you want a go yourself.

It happened by accident actually. I started with Dylusions Ink Spray then stamped on that, but it was too limey so added more layers of ink and then even more ink spray... till eventually, I turned my fingers a gorgeous purply blue and the card background became something a dragonfly could call home. Just have fun with the inks and stamps and let the art flow :)

I love making cards - birthdays, Christmas, thank you, hello, any reason at all. What I don't do though, is remember to send them. Thank you's always get posted "on time" as there is no set date, and one also goes out with every order. At least that's something! So I'm making a calendar for special occasions - with reminders to say "post a card today to...". Its going to have a pocket for stamps too. No excuses from now on... if you have a birthday and would like a card, send me your address and birthday :)

I've got a stash of Graphic 45 papers that don't seem to sell (they have a calendar already printed on them, making life easy!), so obviously they're meant for me to use. I'll post a pic when I've gathered the 'kit' together... so you can see what I mean. It'll be a calendar for every year, meaning, no weekdays marked.

If you'd like a collection of cards to give away to your loved ones, I'd love to make them for you - Only $5 each including an envelope with 70c stamp :) Any style, any colour! I keep making some to sell but end up giving them away, but eventually I'll have a stash for you to see, choose from and put in the shop.

Happy Easter!

Hello :D

I want to wish you all a wonderful Easter and hope you are having a happy weekend with loved ones!

As usual, we coloured eggs for breakfast... and also as usual, colouring in a hurry before they went cold!

Colouring Easter eggs is all about being creative, not painting masterpieces suitable for a museum, so we just have fun with it!

I used the watercolour Distress markers and a black Tombow.

Around 12 years ago, I made some little chickens and bunnies for my family. 

As you can see, they're still around! 

This pair of chicks belong to my parents, and my brother still has the bunnies as well. Must make some more one day!

They're still as cute today as they were back then! The egg is still inside but is dried out, rattlling around inside the shell.

Here in Australia, we have a cute little marsupial called a Bilby, which is considered to be the Aussie Easter "Bunny" as the rabbit is an introduced animal to our country. 

Bilbies, just like the adorable Easter bunnies, bring us chocolate eggs (and chocolate ladybugs too this year!) for us to enjoy.

This year's Easter sketch is of a Bilby saying hello to his friend, Andy Ant.

How to Cool Down in an Aussie Summer ... or ... Far Out, its so HOT This Week!!!

Hello everyone :)

Its a stinking hot summery day here in Adelaide but the last couple of weeks have been mild so once this heat has left us, we can go back to complaining about the cold! lol

I realise 30C isn't cold, but its alot cooler than 43C. Some parts of Australia reaches over 50C... they're just not usually recorded officially by the news but it happens every January.

We lived in a small country town called Laura a few years ago ("few", ok, it was more than a few... it was about 7 years ago). Dad had a thermometer in the shade and another in the sunshine. More than once the shade was over 45C while in the sun it was 57C. Too hot for anything except keeping watch on the animals and for any smoke in the distance.

As a child we didn't have an air conditioner, but don't remember it being as hot. But then we were so busy playing with water (buckets, pans, pots, anything), under a sprinkler, in a wading pool, at the swimming pool across the road from my Nanna's (how lucky was that!!!) or going to our local beach.

How to stay cool in Summer ... Visit places with lots of water!
Glenelg is a popular seaside suburb of Adelaide with a beautiful sandy beach with refreshing, cool seawater.
Perfect for swimming, paddling and sailing or simply building sandcastles.

When I was little, I'd be found sitting (drawing or colouring in) in front of a fan that had a wet flannel on the back (hanging on the cage of the fan). The air got dragged by the fan through the wet flannel and magically made the air cooler. It blew the pages around but it didn't matter if you were cool.

These days, I just go and drench my head in the shower!!! Much faster... but drips everywhere so no good to do when I've got to work on the computer! Somehow water and electricity don't mix. lol
Thank goodness I work from home, so I can go for a swim in the shower whenever I fancy and then get back to work after I've stopped dripping!

I think the easiest way to stay cool is to get wet - either with the hose, sprinker, pool, beach, river or just in the bathroom sink. But sometimes (when its not as hot as today) its refreshing simply to visit the many beautiful places we have that have lots of lovely, refreshing, cold, wet water. Whether you go in the water is up to you... sometimes its enough just to visit!

This beautiful spot is the Myponga Reservoir, found south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The Fleurieu is a very popular tourist and wine growing region of South Australia. Although we obviously can't swim in a reservoir, its just nice to visit and gaze at all the water ... a lovely cool breeze helps too!

Staying cool on a summer's day is fun when visiting Victor Harbor and Granite Island (pictured), also on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Granite Island is a gorgeous little island with fairy penguins (who are now called Little Penguins and like to hide (as they're obviously sensible) from humans), rocky beaches and a nature walk that shows off amazing views.

I feel for all those people in Africa and other places that have similar conditions. I expect those that live on the coastline are a bit like us and flock to the sea when its warm. But I often wonder how those inland stay cool in this heat. Its so dry and hot over there and most of them don't even have a fan, let alone an air conditioner... but I guess you do get used to it.

The Tour DownUnder starts on Sunday. For those that don't know, its a week long bicycle race that's part of a world circuit of races. Similar to the Tour de France but in South Australia.

Glenelg Esplanade ... One of the popular "go-to" places for all the tourists and bike riders while in Adelaide. It has big beautiful shady trees, a gorgeous beach and lots of fantastic cafes. Oh, and a few icecream shops! Icecream is fabulous for cooling down on the inside :)

Having the Tour DownUnder is fantastic... so many visitors come to our little part of the world and its really busy everywhere for that one week. Locals come out of hiding to watch the race by the side of the road and there are special events everywhere.

I hope it cools down a little for them or they'll be racing their bicycles up and down hills on melting bitumen and breathing by boiling hot air while surrounded by a dry, wilting landscape. I'm wishing for a spit or two of rain so at least the dust gets dampened down. But that might be asking too much at this time of year!!!

It'll be winter again before we know it and I'm sure to write something about how cold it gets!!! lol Cold here isn't half as cold as it gets in the Antarctica or even like it was in New York last week... that was so very cold.

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014

Got plans to celebrate the arrival of the New Year? I'm seeing the year in with my family while painting and drawing... well, I've got all these ufos to finish (unfinished objects) and new ones to start that its best to get started as soon as I can.

I've got big exciting plans for 2014. I've finally opened my online shop at www.shop.artbyjenny.com.au and it is ready to receive customers (that's you! lol). So far I've added Darkroom Door stamps, Graphic 45 papers and stamps, my own logos and, of course, ATC supplies.

For those of you new to the unique and wonderful worlds of Darkroom Door and Graphic 45, here are two stunning creations from each.

Each of these two beautiful artworks could be recreated using any of the Graphic 45 papers or Darkroom Door stamps. Let your imagination be your guide!

The photo I've added to my eShop this week is the one with the beautiful butterflies coloured with the gorgeous Dylusions ink spray.

I just LOVE these butterflies! They're easy to do too.

Simply cut out your shapes from a piece of card (gloss is preferable but not essential, to get the brightest of colours). Then you build a spray booth out of a cardboard box or set aside a place to spray somewhere that won't matter if it gets spattered with ink.

Next you choose the colours of Dylusions you want to use (sometimes the hardest thing!)... then with a quick spritz, spray the shape with the ink.

I like to use more than one colour at a time... the colours blend beautifully and no two shapes will be the same. Also, when the bottles run out (or get very low), they can be mixed together and/or have water added.

For a bit of sparkly fun, you can also add a bit of Perfect Pearls powder. Remember to shake the bottle well. And label it so you don't get muddled up. I put the remains of yellow and orange in a yellow bottle but didn't label it... it took me ages to work out why my yellow was so dark!

You can also spray your card before you punch or cut out the shapes, but if you are using a punch, I recommend you cut first, spray later. The Dylusions ink tends to thicken the cardstock slightly. It can still be punched through, but not as easily as before it is inked.

Merry Christmas to All

Just popped on Blogger to wish you all a beautiful happy day, whatever way you are or aren't celebrating Christmas Day.

Today our family is spending the day together, relaxing with coffee then a delicious lunch and opening gifts. 

We've just cleaned up from lunch (4.30pm!!! lol... its a very snailpaced slow day!) and the boys (Dad, my brother Michael and my son Zac) are in the lounge reading, chatting or whatever they're doing while Mum and I are out here drawing ... we both got an engraved picture to scratch. How awesome are these? We're pretty lucky!

Such a lovely day!!! As it should be :)

I hope you're all having as much fun as we are!

Behind the Scenes of Wood'n Marbles

A behind the scenes snapshot from Ray James of Wood'n Marbles.

Ray is a talented masterturner and timber craftsman, and also my Dad!

He has been busy making a wonderful supply of handcrafted shapes and detailed silhouettes out of wood and some out of MDF (a type of manufactured wood).

Above is Ray using his scroll saw, creating a little arched 'Merry Christmas' sign for a large nativity scene he's making.

Below is a silhouette shape he made a few weeks ago. Its around 15cm long, small enough for an ornament or to use on a card, yet large enough to use on a scrapbook page.

He's made so many over the past few weeks! Here's a small sample, including angels, seahorses, cats, donkeys, rabbits and fish.

Everything Ray makes is always either useful and/or beautiful. I'm not biaised at all either, its simply a fact!!! Ok, maybe I favour his work a little because he's my Dad, but you'll see... his work is amazing!

If you have any special requests, simply ask... Ray can create just about anything!

Here are two of my favourite trivets he's made... a dragon and tiger.

Each is the size of a regular trivet or a small plate. 

These beautiful creations and more will be added to my shop (www.shop.artbyjenny.com.au) from early January. 

I love everything my Dad makes and am pretty excited that he's agreed to sell some of his creations in my shop!

Maths n Other Stuff

Hey, would you look at that!??? I do need my advanced maths skills after all.

Here I was, always thinking I just need to use the basics throughout my life, after all, I'm an artist not a mathematician!

But now that I'm ordering stock from companies like Graphic45, Darkroom Door and Ranger Inks, I'll need to source that part of the maths lessons that included things like averages, probability, percentages (yeah, I know, but its only basic for some!! ha ha) extra long division, currency conversion and stuff to do with tax...!

But I think the excitement of receiving parcels like this one from Graphic45 is worth every single sum :)

All of these lovelies will all be available at my online shop by New Year's :)

Along with the Graphic45 stash will be Ranger's Distress Inks, Distress Paints, Distress Markers, Archival inks and Tim Holtz tools, plus Darkroom Door stamps, photochips, word strips and ATC needs.

Our 2013 Christmas Preparations

Its a beautiful day here in little ol' Adelaide :) The sun is shining, the sky is a pretty blue, the birds are singing and our cat is snoozing on the window ledge - with one eye open (as cats do), waiting for her feathered friends to get closer. 

Its getting closer to Christmas day, so we're cleaning and tidying, in preparation for all the mess that tinsel makes when you hang it all over the house! 

Of course having our cat help hang the tinsel might have something to do with that. Here she is "helping" in the Christmas tree.

Each year I also painting pictures and messages on the front window, hang ragdoll angels and santas (made by my bestie!) on our doornobs, display a little antique nativity scene complete with five wise men (the three traditional men plus my two amphibian wise men) and Santa, and add a beautiful red ribbon to our paper mache kangaroo.

I love creating the display each year. As Christmas Day gets nearer, the wise men and shepherd (with his sheep of course) "travel" closer to Joseph and Mary. Socks likes to "help" with this as well, knocking them around the tabletop! So helpful :)

When we were children we used to thread coloured, sugar coated popcorn on cotton and hang it on the Christmas tree along with the usual striped peppermint candy canes and chocolate baubles. We only hang candy canes now with other decorations, and eat the chocoloate baubles if we get any - it just melts if we hang it on the tree!

It seems so much effort for a few weeks of the year but it makes so many people smile! And our cat just loves playing with it all and trying to knock everything over... a nice change for her from the usual toys of empty boxes and scraps of paper!

Its all good, nothing is breakable and its fun for everyone.

Friday Fun

Hello everyone :)

I can't believe its Friday already!!! I missed a day this week... no idea where it went either. 

Found out yesterday, after my little vegemite (he's 15 but he will always be my "lil vegemite", lol) came home from school, that it was Thursday, not Wednesday! I was stunned!!!

So obviously I've had a severe lack of coffee this week and have decided to find some fun facts about coffee and caffiene.

Juggling

Welcome to my new blog :)

My plan is that it'll be a mix of graphic design and art, fabulous finds, tips, ideas and tutorials plus shop news and a scattering of things from my life in the slow lane.

My other blog 'Floating Around in Bubbles' that was chatting about my Redbubble artwork and crafty creations, will be archived and that new one over at Wordpress will be removed (or deleted, exterminated or erased... depending on your upbringing) because I think there are enough things to juggle each day without having three blogs to forget to update!!!

To start off this new blog, I've chosen to chat about what I often talk about in the real world (ok, and on Facebook too) ... Juggling everything to get more time out of every day!

We all have loads we want to get done and often do try to get it all done in one day at the same time as juggling family, friends and work commitments. But every day goes past at the speed of a blink and I don't know about you, but it seems as though my todo list is getting longer, not shorter!

I have a grand plan to fix my ever growing todo list... I'm going to set a time limit for answering and writing emails, Facebook, Pinterest and those little games that only take a minute each to play.

--- ha ha ha... only a minute! That's so funny!!! How many times have you gone to check Snoopy's Street Fair and collect the coins and water the sunflowers, only to be sucked into wandering around with Snoopy and Woodstock, giggling at their antics? No, me neither.

But anyway, I'm going to set the alarm (that I will NOT ignore) for an hour each day. Not an hour for each item, but an hour in total. I'm thinking an hour in the morning before work, then another after dinner. Starting tonight!

I have a feeling this will be just like those New Year's resolutions that are made every year. But the intention is good. Wish me luck :)
